For Santa Monica–based animator Clark Song and his wife, Shonna, moving their young family to Ventura meant a better quality of life and a new venture. In 2013, the Songs launched the California Cut brand of hand-silkscreened T-shirts that celebrate their new hometown area and the state.

Clark does the artwork design and production on each men’s or woman’s heavyweight, 100% cotton shirt, and Shonna is the CEO/president of the company.

For local art ideas, Clark is inspired by “everything,” he says. “There is a lot to boast about this area so it makes it very easy to translate all the great attributes Ventura County has to offer into positive visual designs.”

The shirts are designed for locals and tourists, he says. “I want the designs to convey something authentic about Ventura and represent the town or neighborhood [people] are from in a familiar way.”

Clark is a self-proclaimed punster, so many designs have his humor silkscreened in. Case in point: the Ventura County farmers’ market design proclaiming “Eat Your Heart Out,” with an artichoke illustration (pictured above). Clark knows artichokes aren’t a huge crop here, but says he used it for the sake of the joke. (That’s OK, Clark, they are in season in Ventura County late fall into spring.)

The shirts are available at select farmers’ markets and Very Ventura Gift Shop and Gallery (Fun-In-Ventura.com).
