Senator Gaylord Nelson reportedly saw the slink from an airplane and was inspired to start Earth Day. At the UNESCO conference, environmentalist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the earth to be held on the first day of spring. He wrote a proclaimation that was signed by UN Secretary General U Thant but Earth Day gained more awareness.
