We met through a mutual friend group and bonded over a shared love of music and a complete disregard for adulting. It was, in the most loving way possible, a match made in degenerate heaven. Seven years later, we still hadn’t found anyone who matched our particular brand of weird—so we made it official.
Our wedding had two parts, both deeply intentional. The ceremony was small and private—just close friends and family gathered at Jason’s parents’ home. His mother had passed the year before, and she always dreamed that one of her children would get married on that property, with the ocean view and the towering palm trees as a backdrop. Holding the ceremony there was our way of honoring her and keeping her present in the day.
The reception was something else entirely. We took over the Sea Center on Stearns Wharf, a Santa Barbara institution participating in environmental eff orts. Th ey closed the aquarium exclusively for us— and we celebrated on the open deck with the Santa Barbara mountains behind us and the sound of the ocean all around.
Our reception theme was “Disco Shark,” and we leaned into it fully with a disco ball spinning above the dance floor and a stunning handmade paper-mache disco shark centerpiece created by Devin’s mom, which anchored the whole look. Th ere was very little that was mass-produced or shipped in. A handmade ocean-themed seating chart crafted by Devin’s mom and family set the tone the moment guests arrived. Tables were decorated with arrangements from our floral vendor alongside plants pulled straight from our own garden. The cake was decorated by Devin’s aunt, who adorned it with purple orchids. A friend sourced fresh local uni directly from a diver he knew, and we served it at the reception—about as farm-to-table (or sea-to-table) as it gets.

Don’t plan the wedding you think you’re supposed to have, plan the one that actually sounds fun to you. Ours had a disco shark, a rolling cannabis table, and fresh uni from a guy who dives for it. None of that was in any wedding magazine (until now), and it made the night unforgettable. The details that feel most “you” are the ones guests remember and talk about for years.
