Nostalgia: A Taste of the East Coast with Local Ingredients

The earliest tastes of my childhood in the 1970s aren’t my fondest memories. I was never a fan of the trendy chicken pot pie, macaroni ’n’ cheese or tuna noodle casseroles. Although my mom poured over Gourmet magazine, our daily fare was nothing close to that, which ultimately inspired me to create better meals. For me, nostalgia goes beyond just a gateway to the past. It became a powerful force that shaped both my culinary career and my present passion to nourish with presence and honor memory.

My first culinary recollections may not have been perfect, but they taught me what mattered: that cooking can also heal, center and connect. My approach in the kitchen is that it is a sacred space, where energy and intention become flavor. The spirituality of cooking, for me, is a discipline of presence—an everyday practice that asks me to show up fully, even in the smallest gestures.

I treat each mise en place as a meditative act: massaging meats with marinades, rinsing rice in water ’til it runs clear. Each is a deliberate breath that grounds the work in mindfulness. Not only focusing on whole ingredients, but also pouring compassion and hope into every dish, with the aim of creating an outcome that nourishes my body and soul. Moments that anchor me, and foster community around the table.

This is how I translate memory into meaning: through food that feeds my soul as surely as it feeds my appetite. The intention is connection— the way a plate can spark gratitude, spark conversation and remind me that home is a place I create, one dish at a time.

I grew up in the Maryland/Washington, DC, area and the Eastern Shore, where I was fortunate to learn some of my favorite recipes from my grandmother, whose kitchen was always filled with the comforting aromas of home-cooked meals. She taught me the importance of using fresh, local ingredients, and her dishes often featured the rich flavors of the Mid-Atlantic region. These are the memories and recipes I cherish, and I am excited to share them with you, hoping to bring a taste of nostalgia and warmth to your table.
