“A common ingredient and a common cause

October 2019

WHAT? Chefs, bakers, brewers, and makers from across Los Angeles offer a menu item highlighting October’s featured produce (pomegranates), and then donate a predetermined portion of proceeds from each sale to Food Forward. Food Forward is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that collects and donates fresh produce that would otherwise go to waste to 1.75 million Southern Californians each year.

WHY? 1.2 million Angelenos are food insecure, while millions of pounds of perfectly good fruits and veggies go to waste here every day.

WHO? Restaurants and bakeries such as Clementine, Mohawk Bend, and Donut Friend, have participated in the past, and we'd love to expand. If you’re looking to leverage your role as a change agent in our food system, Harvest Change helps turn your menu into a platform to get that conversation started.

WHERE & WHEN? Harvest Change is a collaborative promotion. You participate from your own place of business. There is a one-month commitment for the Harvest Change menu item, from October 1 through October 31. Promotion is slated to begin mid-August.

FAQs

How much should I pass on to Food Forward? We suggest at least $1 per item, but let us know what works for you. Maybe it’s $4 for every pizza, $1 for every jar of jam, or 15% for every pint of beer. If you only want to offer it once a week for a month, that works, too. We do ask that the donation amount be made explicit to customers; i.e. “20%” or “$3” instead of “a portion.”

Will Food Forward provide me with produce? Unfortunately, we cannot. However, our 2018 partners found that simply highlighting an ingredient under the Harvest Change banner was still a super-effective way to tell the story of Food Forward and foster awareness of food waste!
